“Trends in Cyber-crime, Cyber-Security, Online Privacy in Africa”

Due to advance in technology across almost all sectors, it has become very easy for people to use forms of technology for various crimes which end up harming the lives of others and the society we live in.This follow up conference to the Annual Lex Informatica Conference which took place on the 7– 8 July 2016 in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Extended Conference aims to give a broader understanding on issues that affect the society technologically such as cyber-crime. We also look into aspects that protect or prevent cyber-crime such as, POPI and online privacy. Since it is also International Cyber Security Month the Conference will also focus on Cyber Security.

Cyber-crime is a major technological crime which affects the society, it is an offense that is committed against individual or groups of individuals with a criminal motive to intentionally harm the reputation of the victim or cause physical or mental harm or loss to the victim directly or indirectly using modern telecommunication networks such as Internet, chat rooms, emails, mobile phones (sms/mms).

POPI is short for Protection of Personal Information Act which primarily deals with the protection of personal information in the possessions in and use thereof by third parties and the consequences of noncompliance and or compromise of personal information.

Cyber-security is referred to as information technology security, focuses on protecting computers, networks, programmes and data from unintended and unauthorized access. The improved security of cyberspace and increase in cyber defense results from cyber-security.

Online privacy which is also known as internet privacy is the privacy and security level of personal data published via the internet, with the rising use of the internet as well as online banking in businesses this brings a concern to people that hackers and viruses may have the ability to access their private information.
